people in the Village, especially myself, are now looking at their family
history and the families that have been in the area for many years. Westward
Ho! of course will not have any families that have been there for hundreds
of years, wheras Northam and Appledore do. In Northam the names of Batten, Bennett, Griffey, and Prouse, are all found in the Village in the mid 18th Century. The same time span sees the name Berry, Bowden, Cox, Curtis, Evans, Fisher (most of the Fisher family moved there in the mid 18th Century from North Molton), Ford, Powe, Slade (who also moved from North Molton) and Williams, in Appledore. My own family having originated in Barnstaple, and traced back to 1520, so far, with my Mother's family the Griffey's, seeming to have originated in Northam has given me a great interest in Genealogy and led me to search for the families that originated here or have moved to the District. There are many sources of information, for those wishing to trace their Family History, both on the Internet and in the District. The main sources in Northam are the Registry Office, which holds all the Bideford Districts Birth, Marriage and Death records, and the Community Archive. Both these sources of information are situated in the Council Chambers in Windmill Lane. The North Devon Maritime Museum, in Appledore, also has a computer resource which is part of the North Devon Record Office. Sources of Genealogical Data on the World Wide Web |
