DEVON W.I.MARKETS
Jean Goaman Tel: (01237) 471395 Laburnum Landcross Bideford, EX39 5JA
Markets began as an initiative of the WI movement in 1919 at a time of national economic difficulty and unrest following the First World War. They were able to help not only their own members, but unemployed people, pensioners and ex-servicemen, to sell surplus garden produce.
There are now over 530 Markets in England, Wales and the Channel Islands, with an annual turnover well over £12 m. Although it is possible for individuals to make a reasonable profit from their produce, the Markets are run as co-operatives by a non-profit making company, now separate from the WI. They are places where good quality home-produced garden, dairy, kitchen and craft items are sold directly to the general public.
Throughout changing conditions, the aims of the Markets have been the same – to make it worthwhile financially to keep gardens in cultivation; to prevent waste by encouraging good growing and harvesting; to help an increasing number of people to develop their skills and market their produce by working together co-operatively.

STEVENSTONE AND TORRINGTON FARMER’S BRANCH – PONY CLUB
District Commissioner (DC): Mrs Ro Day Chapples Farm Yelland Cross Fremington, Barnstaple EX31 3DR
Tel: (01271) 860520
The Stevenstone and Torrington Farmer’s Branch of the Pony Club have members from about the age of 5 years who can continue to be members up to the age of 21, however most leave around the age of 16/17.
Training nights are held every summer with summer camps for both seniors and juniors. There are mounted and unmounted working rallies throughout the year, a Christmas party, an open horse show and a members horse show. The idea of Pony Club is to given instruction in horsemanship and care of horses and ponies whilst providing friendship and fun. Members progress through the club and can attain various standards of tests from ‘D’ through to the ultimate ‘A’ (not many get that far). The highest tests are equivalent to parts of the BHS (British Horse Society) tests system and will give members who attain them, the ability to teach and to have an extremely high standard of horsemanship.
There are also interbranch and area competitions that are run annually. These form the local part of national championships, e.g. the Prince Phillip Cup (mounted games); Dressage; show jumping; one day eventing; tetrathlon, (swimming, running, shooting and riding); polo etc. This Club takes part in some of these.
The Pony Clubs were originally formed on the hunt areas and have loose connections with them. There are other Clubs (on a smaller scale) formed on riding centres.

Tarka Country Trust is northern Devon’s principal environmental charity and has, just in this new millennium, raised and distributed over £270,000 to local environmental projects, including financial support for this “Torridge on Show” Exhibition. Its aim is to become northern Devon’s main enabling body and the first point of call for those wishing to carry out projects that are in sympathy with the Trust’s objectives. The Tarka Foundation is a social enterprise, established with private capital to support the natural, social and economic environment, especially projects which the Directors believe show wide and essential impacts and are in response to its published grant programmes. Ad-hoc funding applications outside of published programmes are not accepted. During the past year The Tarka Foundation has assisted over 600 businesses with grants and provided training to over 100 voluntary and community sector organizations.
